EUGENE — Autzen Stadium’s first home CFP game saw Oregon answer the bell, though the Ducks’ defense softened a bit in the second half.
Oregon rolled to a 51–34 victory over visiting James Madison in the CFP first round, showcasing a potent offense that scored early and often.
By coach Dan Lanning’s standard, it wasn’t pretty in box-score nuance, but it was a decisive win. Oregon’s defense substituted heavily in the second half, after the Ducks’ starters held JMU to a 34-6 halftime score.
Next up for Oregon is the Orange Bowl quarterfinal matchup with Texas Tech on New Year’s Day.

Oregon’s offense can keep pace with anyone in the nation, but the defense’s ability to consistently get stops through all four quarters, that’s what determines the Ducks’ true CFP ceiling.
The Ducks’ offensive talent gives them a chance in any shootout, but national championships are usually won, not just scored to. Defense, fundamentals, turnovers, and coaching adjustments are king in the CFP.
