2026 NCAA ELIGIBILITY RULES:
Never miss Ducks4Life
EUGENE ā Itās a big week for the trolls, hot-take fools, and master debaters. And casual fans are all kinds of confused about Mondayās announcement from Oregon coach Dan Lanning that QB1 Dante Moore is out for the 2026 season.
Can Moore go to the NFL? YES, 2025 was his third season out of high school (2024 redshirt). He was already eligible for the Draft last year and chose to stay at Oregon.
Can Moore play for Oregon in 2027? YES, heās played three seasons in four calendar years; he has eligibility to play for Oregon in 2027.
Is Moore eligible to request a medical redshirt for 2026? YES, players who were enrolled in college for 2026 can use EITHER the new 5-for-5 rule OR apply for a medical waiver/redshirt, pushing their 2026 college eligibility to 2027. A medical redshirt would give Moore an additional year of eligibility.
Can Moore transfer? YES, having at least one more year of college eligibility means he can transfer.
As of Oct. 27, are any of those outcomes decided? NO. Draft announcements typically happen around the NFLās January deadline. The next NCAA transfer portal window is also in January. In Monday press availability, Lanning said he and Moore have yet to discuss whether Moore will play for Oregon in 2027.
The real question
For me, the real question is this: Has Moore accomplished his college football goals? Not yet. He still has an opportunity to try for a Heisman and a championship.
Plus, his four-game 2026 season wonāt earn him a Draft payday that matches his NIL for playing the 2027 season at Oregon.
Mooreās 2026 stat line stands at 69 completions on 99 attempts, 926 yards, nine TDs, and zero INTs in four games. Compare that with 3,565 yards, 30 TDs and 10 INTs in 2025. The injury-shortened season just isnāt satisfying for anybody, Oregon fans included.
Beyond being out for the 2026 season, nothing is confirmed yet about Moore in 2027. Understandably, a lot will depend on Lanningās 2027 OC hire.
Lanningās OC hire matters
Do I think Moore will transfer? Oregon was his first choice twice. Out of high school, and again after his freshman year at UCLA. Moore decided twice that Oregon was his Plan A.
Flight-risk paranoia from the āhot-takeā troll predictions that Moore will grab a portal ticket out of Eugene just donāt add up.
The loudest voices already want to decide Dante Mooreās future for him. But Lanningās 2027 OC hire is a huge factor that remains to be seen. Mooreās comfort with the next system will no doubt be part of his eventual decision.
What we know so far: Drew Mehringer was dismissed Oct. 25, and Jay Johnson will be Oregonās interim OC. Johnson is Oregonās assistant QB coach, with OC experience in several previous roles.
Mooreās 2027 eligibility
Even before the injury at USC, Moore already had another season of eligibility:
2023: UCLA (season 1)
2024: Redshirt
2025: Oregon QB1 (season 2)
2026: Injured
Moore has played two full seasons, 2023 and 2025. Per the NCAA website: Players who were enrolled in college for 2026 can use EITHER the new 5-for-5 rule OR apply for a medical waiver/redshirt, pushing their 2026 college eligibility to 2027. A medical redshirt for the 2026 injury would mean Moore has only played the 2023 and 2025 seasons, with additional eligibility for 2027 and possibly for 2028 as his fourth season in a five-year span.
The bottom line
Oregon needs answers at QB and OC now. But a healthy Moore returning in 2027 would give the Ducks a proven starter who led them to a 13-2 record and a College Football Playoff semifinal in 2025. Thatās a CFP-caliber foundation Lanning will likely pursue. And itās a solid option for Moore, if his college goals and NIL earnings outweigh his NFL Draft stock.
The trolls, fools, and debaters can pretend to know Mooreās next move, or pretend to resist the factual fabric of reality by trying to dispute current NCAA rules. But all the choices for 2027 still belong to Dante Moore, and time is on his side.
